Business loans with bad credit in the UK

A poor credit file narrows the market, it does not close it. What changes is which lenders will look, what they price at, and what evidence they want to see.

What lenders mean by bad credit

There are two files in play: the company's, held by commercial credit agencies, and the director's personal file. Underwriters look at both, and they care more about recency and pattern than about a single number.

  • Missed payments in the last 3–6 months carry far more weight than problems two years old.
  • An unsatisfied CCJ is the single biggest blocker; a satisfied one with an explanation is workable.
  • Frequent unauthorised overdraft use and returned direct debits read worse than a low score.
  • A single event with a clear cause and a clean run since is often accepted.

Products that look past the score

  • Invoice finance — the strength sits in your customers' ability to pay, not yours.
  • Merchant cash advance — underwritten on card takings, so consistent daily sales carry the decision.
  • Asset finance — secured on the asset being funded, which reduces the lender's exposure.
  • Revenue-based short-term lending — priced on the last 3–6 months of bank statements.

What helps an application land

  • Six months of clean, unbroken bank statements showing genuine trading.
  • A short written explanation of what caused the credit issue and what changed since.
  • A specific purpose with a return — funding a confirmed order beats "working capital".
  • Up-to-date filings at Companies House; overdue accounts are read as a warning sign.
  • A willingness to give a personal guarantee, where the director can reasonably do so.

What to fix before you apply

If nothing is urgent, three months of preparation changes the pricing more than shopping around does: settle or arrange any outstanding judgments, bring filings current, stop unauthorised overdraft use, and keep the trading account clean.

Common questions

Can I get a business loan with bad credit in the UK?
Often yes, but the shape of the deal changes. Lenders that price on trading performance — invoice finance, merchant cash advances, asset finance and short-term revenue-based lending — weigh recent bank statements more heavily than a credit score.
Does the director's personal credit matter?
For unsecured lending, usually yes, because most unsecured facilities need a director's personal guarantee. Defaults, CCJs and recent missed payments reduce the options but rarely remove all of them.
Will a CCJ against the company stop an application?
A satisfied CCJ with an explanation is often workable. An unsatisfied CCJ is a harder stop, and settling or arranging it before applying materially improves the outcome.
Will checking my options damage my credit score further?
Submitting an enquiry to Backed does not itself run a credit search. A funding partner may carry out its own checks later and should explain the type of search and seek any consent required.

If a bank has declined the application

A bank decline is not always caused by poor credit. Policy, affordability, trading history, sector and incomplete information can also matter. Read our guide to business funding after a bank decline before making further applications.

Tell us what your company needs to fund

Submitting an enquiry to Backed does not itself run a credit search. We may introduce your company to a funding partner whose criteria may fit; that provider determines eligibility and any checks required.
